Alcatraz Island is an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It is currently a National Historic Landmark managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Alcatraz island originally served as home to a lighthouse but a military prison was opened in 1868. Most famously, the Alcatraz federal prison operated from 1933-1963 and was home to many infamous inmates including Al Capone and the "Birdman of Alcatraz" Robert Stroud.
