Cover of Red Harvest

Red Harvest (1929) was Dashiell Hammett's first novel. The main protagonist is The Continental Op, a recurring character from Hammett's short detective stories.

Hammett apparently based the novel on his own experiences in Butte, Montana where he worked as an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. For Red Harvest, Hammett moved the events to the city of San Francisco.
